There are five fixtures rather than the usual six for the second consecutive matchweek, with Arsenal v Everton rescheduled to Wednesday 13 May to accommodate Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg away at Lyon on Saturday.

Saturday’s programme opens with Manchester United hosting Brighton in Leigh – the only fixture of the day, and the tightest call of the round.

On our predictions, Manchester City are strong favourites at home to Liverpool with a 78% win probability, while Chelsea are heavy favourites away to bottom-placed Leicester at 80%. Aston Villa are expected to beat West Ham with a 57% win probability in a fixture that could shape the final survival picture. Tottenham are marginal favourites against London City Lionesses at 42%, but that one still looks finely balanced. Manchester United’s UWCL hopes are slipping away in real time. The goalless draw at Spurs continued a damaging run across competitions – three defeats and a draw since their late win over Everton – and left them fourth, four points behind Chelsea and two behind Arsenal, who still have two games in hand. With only Brighton and Chelsea left to play, United surely have to win this match to keep their Champions League bid alive.

Brighton arrive in a completely different headspace. Their performances in recent weeks have been anything but mid-table. They knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup away from home, then took down Manchester City 3–2 in the WSL – two statement results that make this trip to United feel far less predictable. Given United’s current form, Brighton will surely fancy themselves in this fixture.

Four WSL matches without a win now for Martin Ho’s side – their longest winless league run of the season. Last weekend, they generated 22 shots and 42 touches in United’s box but still could not find a way past Phallon Tullis-Joyce. The challenge now is obvious: turn dominance into goals.

London City Lionesses, by contrast, bounced back emphatically last weekend, putting five past Leicester in a 5–1 demolition that ended a five-match winless run. With momentum restored and Spurs still searching for fluency in the final third, London City will surely fancy themselves in this fixture.

Chelsea arrive looking to seal their UWCL qualification. They are four points clear of Manchester United – a win would confirm their Champions League place for next season. They'll want that sealed before the final-day match against Manchester United.

Aston Villa return to WSL action after more than a month away, with last weekend’s fixture rearranged. Before that, Villa came from behind to beat Leicester 2–1, but their broader form remains patchy: their last home league win came all the way back on 11 January against Brighton.

But the defensive side is where this gets really interesting. Villa have conceded 10 set-play goals from 8.1 set-piece xG – the worst record in the league – while West Ham have conceded 8 from 7.2 set-piece xG, the second-worst in the WSL.

Bottom line: both teams attack set pieces well. Both teams defend them poorly. This could be one of the key battlegrounds at Villa Park.

The Big Stories

Matchweek 20 was the weekend the WSL title race refused to wrap itself up early. Manchester City came in needing a win at Brighton to make Arsenal the only team mathematically able to catch them. They lost 3–2. With Arsenal still holding three games in hand, the run-in is properly alive again.

The round produced 17 goals across five fixtures – an average of 3.40 per game, comfortably above the 2.94 season average. Arsenal v Aston Villa was rescheduled to accommodate Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Lyon.

At the Copperjax Community Stadium, London City Lionesses ended a five-match winless run with a 5–1 demolition of Leicester City. Eder Maestre’s side were simply too much for Leicester to handle. The Foxes – already battling relegation – saw the gap to West Ham widen to seven points with just two games left for both.

At St Helens’ BrewDog Stadium, West Ham snatched three crucial survival points at Liverpool through a 6th-minute Cornelia Kapocs own goal. Liverpool dominated possession but lacked quality in the final action, recording zero big chances all game. The Reds’ five-match unbeaten run ends, while Rita Guarino’s Hammers boost their survival hopes meaningfully.

• Brighton were below their season averages on almost every metric – fewer shots, less territory and less possession – but the standout was their efficiency: 7 shots on target from just 9 attempts. Three found the net against the league leaders.

• City were dominant across the board, as they usually are, and created more than enough to win the game – above their season averages for chances created, touches in the opposition box and big chances. The standout, though, was their 7 big chances missed – a costly pattern on a day when dominance did not translate into control.

Implications

• Brighton remain 6th on 24 points – but the result matters far more than the position. After a first win over a top-four side this season, following their FA Cup quarter-final win over Arsenal, Dario Vidošić’s side should be full of confidence going into the final few matches of the season.

• Manchester City remain top on 49 points – but the title clinch is delayed. Jeglertz’s side now need maximum points from their final two matches against Liverpool (H) and West Ham (A) to be sure of their first WSL title since 2016.

• Our preview made City modest favourites at 52%. The underlying numbers suggest they played broadly as the model expected; they just did not take their chances on a day when Brighton took theirs. Brighton put 7 of their 9 shots on target; City put 6 of 17.

Tottenham Hotspur 0–0 Manchester United

• Tottenham produced one of their most dominant attacking displays of the season. They were above their season averages for shots, chances created and territory – but couldn’t find a way past Phallon Tullis-Joyce. The standout stat was their shot volume: 22 shots, their second-most in a single match this season after the 27 they registered against Villa.

• Manchester United looked drained again, posting numbers well below their season averages across the board. The standout – and an unflattering one – is that their 0.46 xG was almost identical to the 0.46 they posted in the Manchester derby a month ago. The international break was supposed to be a reset; the attacking output suggests it wasn’t.

Implications

• Tottenham are now 30 points, but remain in 5th. They are six matches without a win in all competitions, but a first clean sheet since January 18 win over Leicester will offer Ho something to build on.

• Manchester United climb to 3rd on 39 points – but the gap to Chelsea widens to four, and Arsenal sit just one point behind with three games in hand. United now look increasingly likely to slip out of the UWCL qualification places.

Everton 1–4 Chelsea

• Chelsea were emphatic across the board – comfortably above their season averages for xG, shots, chances created and territory. The standout was their 27 shots and 56 touches in the opposition box – the highest box presence of any team this matchweek.

• Everton were below their season averages on volume – fewer shots, fewer chances created and less territory. The standout was just how thin the threat was: only 4 shots all afternoon.

Implications

• Chelsea remain 2nd on 43 points, four clear of Manchester United and five ahead of Arsenal, who has three games in hand. One more win seals UWCL qualification.

• Everton stay 8th on 20 points – safely clear of relegation. The four-game winning streak that briefly carried them from 11th to 6th now feels like a long time ago: this is now their third consecutive defeat in the WSL.

• Our preview made Chelsea modest favourites at 54%, with set pieces flagged as the key battleground. In the end, Chelsea did not need them: all 4 goals came from open play, although set pieces still accounted for 13% of their total xG.

London City Lionesses 5–1 Leicester City

Key Stats

• LCL produced one of the most complete attacking performances of the matchweek: 2.85 xG from 19 shots – well above their season averages of 1.30 xG and 10.8 shots – with 10 shots on target, more than 2.5 times their 3.9 average, and 7 big chances versus their 2.25 norm. After taking just 2 points from their previous five matches, this was exactly the response Maestre needed.

• Leicester’s 0.61 xG was almost exactly in line with their 0.68 season average – but they managed just 3 shots, 8 touches in the opposition box, below their 13.2 average, and 1 chance created, well below their 4.7 norm. Their cumulative WSL attacking numbers remain the lowest in the division by a wide margin.

Implications

• London City Lionesses remain 7th on 24 points, level with Brighton but behind on goal difference. This was a huge boost for Maestre, whose side had not really got going since the managerial change.

• Leicester remain bottom on 9 points, with the gap to West Ham now 7 points. They still have three matches left, but the margin for error is virtually gone. Mathematically still alive, but practically gone.

• Our preview made LCL strong favourites at 65%, and the result more than confirmed the model’s lean – although it did not expect the victory to be this emphatic.

Liverpool 0–1 West Ham United

Key Stats

• Liverpool were the dominant side in terms of possession and territory, and their core attacking numbers were respectable: shots, 11; shots on target, 3; chances created, 9 – all above their season averages. But in the final action, they were found wanting, creating no clear-cut chances across the full 90 minutes.

• West Ham’s attacking metrics were not great – in fact, they were below their already modest averages in most areas. But they were defensively disciplined, which is commendable for a side that has conceded 41 goals this season. They were also ruthless when it mattered, converting the set-piece opportunity that ultimately decided the game.

Implications

• Liverpool stay 10th on 17 points – still eight clear of the relegation place. This will feel like a missed opportunity, especially with their final two matches coming against the two sides still fighting for the title.

• West Ham move to 16 points but remain 11th – just one point behind Liverpool, with two matches left for both. Although survival is not mathematically secured, they will feel this win is more than enough to keep them in the WSL next season.

Retrospection

• Our preview made Liverpool modest favourites at 51% and gave West Ham only a 16% chance. This was the biggest upset of the round alongside Brighton’s win. We did preview that it was going to be a “tight, nervy game”, with both attacks flagged as among the lowest-output in the WSL – and that played out almost exactly as expected.

Expected Points – MW20: Chelsea Reclaim Second, City Extend Their Underlying Lead, Leicester Drift Further Adrift

The headline xPts story this week mirrors the actual table: Chelsea overtake Arsenal into 2nd place in expected points. Chelsea jumped from 36.36 to 38.84 xPts – the biggest gain of any side – on the back of their 3.10 xG performance at Goodison. Arsenal, who didn’t play, remain on 36.64. They do, however, still have three games in hand.

The other big story is what didn’t happen: Manchester City’s xPts lead actually grew despite losing. They moved from 41.02 to 42.70 xPts. Their cumulative xGF of 52.66 and xGD of +31.07 remain comfortably the best in the division.

Brighton’s defeat of City makes for an interesting xPts story: they took 3 actual points, but their xGD turned negative, moving from +0.24 to −0.12. Their 1.86 xG was good, but conceding 2.36 to City means the win, in underlying terms, was earned through clinical finishing rather than territorial control. They stay 5th in xPts.

Liverpool’s xPts continue to climb despite defeat, moving from 21.74 to 23.11. They extend their gap above Aston Villa, who sit 8th in the expected table on 21.24, even as the actual-table gap shrinks. Their underlying numbers remain closer to mid-table than the relegation picture painted by the actual table.

At the bottom, Leicester sit on 14.18 xPts, 3.43 behind West Ham – a gap that was 2.38 a week ago. Leicester’s cumulative xGF of 12.89 remains by far the lowest in the division, and the gap to safety is widening, not closing.

Matchweek 20 opens the final run-in of the 2025–26 campaign as the WSL returns from a near-month-long international break, and it could be the weekend that leaves Manchester City on the brink of the title.

That’s not a disaster in isolation. But compared to the equivalent fixtures last season, it represents a 21% decline — and every single big-venue derby dropped.

The Numbers

What stands out

The North London Derby lost nearly 11,000 fans. Arsenal vs Tottenham at the Emirates drew 46,123 — a strong crowd by any measure, but down from 56,784 for the same fixture last season. That’s a drop of more than 10,600 for the WSL’s marquee rivalry, and part of a broader pattern this season.

Beyond the Chelsea match which pulled in 56,537, Arsenal’s Emirates attendances have settled into a noticeably lower range. Only two of their nine home fixtures have cleared 40,000, and the majority have drawn between 24,000 and 39,000. Arsenal remain head and shoulders above the rest of the WSL — their figures dwarf the next-best club by a factor of nearly two. The demand is still there, but the peaks are flattening.

The Merseyside derby was nearly halved. Everton vs Liverpool at Goodison drew just 5,292 — down 46% from 9,823 at Goodison in November 2024. This is the fixture that should have been the emotional centrepiece of derby weekend: Liverpool chasing their first WSL Merseyside derby win since 2019, genuine relegation stakes for the Reds, Everton’s first permanent season at Goodison. Instead, it pulled fewer fans than several non-derby fixtures earlier in the season. Scheduling it alongside the Manchester derby and the NLD — both kicking off within hours — meant the Merseyside clash ranked third in interest on its own Saturday.

Old Trafford drew 25k for a title-defining match. Man City arrived eight points clear at the top. United were fighting for Champions League qualification between the legs of their quarter-final against Bayern Munich. The 24,983 attendance was one of United’s biggest WSL crowds — but still a fifth below the 31,465 that watched the same fixture last season. For a match with that much at stake, in that venue, during a men’s break, 25k feels like it should have been higher.

The bottom end was predictable — and predictably low. Chelsea at Kingsmeadow (3,470), West Ham at Chigwell (1,318), and Leicester at the King Power (2,453) all came in within their normal seasonal ranges. These are infrastructure-constrained clubs where attendance is shaped more by venue than by fixture. The only year-on-year riser was Leicester vs Brighton — up 34%, but from a base of 1,832 to 2,453. Low-base arithmetic.

The concentration problem, again

Strip out the Emirates and the aggregate drops to 37,516 across five fixtures — an average of 7,503. Strip out Old Trafford as well and the remaining four games averaged 3,133.

This has been the defining structural pattern of the WSL’s attendance story all season. Arsenal’s Emirates fixtures account for roughly 45% of all league attendance. The next tier — Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Goodison, Anfield — provides occasional five-figure crowds. Everything else sits in the 1,000–4,000 band.

Derby weekend didn’t change that distribution. It reinforced it.

Did the scheduling strategy work?

The logic behind cramming derbies into the men’s international break is straightforward: with no Premier League football, the WSL owns the live schedule. Broadcasters get marquee content. Fans have no competing option. It’s the same thinking behind the September opening weekend, which has delivered strong Round 1 numbers.

But this weekend exposed the limits of that approach. Three simultaneous top-flight derbies didn’t amplify each other — they competed for attention. Media bandwidth was stretched across venues. The Merseyside derby, which in any normal weekend would have been the headline fixture, was buried. Pre-match coverage was dominated by the title implications of Man City’s trip to Old Trafford and the Russo narrative at the Emirates.

The aggregate number of ~84k is fine. But the like-for-like decline of 21% suggests the scheduling window alone isn’t enough to counteract a broader cooling trend. WSL attendances dipped roughly 10% in 2024-25 versus the prior year. This season’s equivalent fixtures are dropping again.

The wider trend

It’s worth being precise about what this does and doesn’t mean. The WSL is not in crisis. A 46,000-strong crowd at the Emirates, a near-25,000 turnout at Old Trafford, and a seven-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow are all markers of a league with genuine commercial appeal. The football itself was outstanding — Russo’s hat-trick, Miedema’s double, Holland’s derby-winning performance for Liverpool, Chelsea’s dramatic comeback.

But the attendance trajectory is no longer pointing upwards. Like-for-like fixture comparisons are declining for a second consecutive season. The gap between the top-end spectacle and the everyday WSL product remains vast.

Derby weekend was designed to be the answer to that. The numbers suggest it’s not enough.

Overview

Matchweek 19 produced 25 goals across six fixtures — an average of 4.17 per game — making it the highest-scoring round of the season so far. It was a weekend defined by derbies: three of the six matches were local rivalries, each delivering its share of drama and talking points.

It was Russo’s first hat-trick for the club, rounding off a week in which she had also scored in the 3–1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Chelsea. Renée Slegers’ side have now recorded 11 consecutive victories in all competitions and sit on 38 points with two games in hand.

At Old Trafford, Manchester City moved a step closer to their first WSL title in a decade with a 3–0 win over Manchester United, thanks to Vivianne Miedema’s quickfire double and a second-half strike from Kerstin Casparij. City now need just two wins from their remaining three matches to seal the championship.

Chelsea survived a breathless seven-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow, edging Aston Villa 4–3 thanks to Sjoeke Nüsken’s strike in the 82nd minute. Five goals flew in between the 20th and 35th minutes, as Chelsea overturned an early Villa lead to go 3–1 up before Kirsty Hanson’s quickfire double brought the visitors level. Nüsken settled it late to secure the win, lifting Chelsea to second on 40 points ahead of a pivotal week — they host Arsenal in the UWCL quarter-final second leg on Wednesday, trailing 1–3.

The Merseyside derby at Goodison Park saw Liverpool race into a 3–0 half-time lead through Ceri Holland’s penalty, a Martina Fernández own goal, and a magnificent curling strike from Holland. Expected Points – MW19: Arsenal Overtake Chelsea, Liverpool Surge, Leicester Sink Further

The biggest xPts story of Matchweek 19 is the positional swap at the top of the expected table. Arsenal’s 2.83 xG against Spurs lifts them to 36.64 xPts, pushing them past Chelsea (36.36) into second place. Their underlying trajectory has been the league’s best for weeks: the strongest defensive record (12.67 xGA), an xGD of +22.17 (second only to City), and two games in hand. Right now, Arsenal look the most dangerous team in the UWCL qualification race — by a considerable margin.

Manchester City extended their lead to 41.02 xPts, 4.38 clear of Arsenal. Their cumulative xGF of 50.30 is the highest in the league by a distance — nearly 12 more than Chelsea’s 38.68 in second. Liverpool were the biggest movers in the bottom half, climbing to eighth (21.74 xPts) above Aston Villa (21.39). The difference-maker was individual brilliance of Lauren James.

• Liverpool were actually more creative than usual – 8 chances created vs their 5.6 season average (≈1.4×) – but the quality wasn’t there. They generated just 0.55 xG from those chances, well below their already low 0.89 average, and managed only 2 shots on target from 8 attempts.

Everton made it three WSL wins in a row as they ground out a 1–0 victory over West Ham to climb to eighth in the table. Hannah Blundell squared a pass to Honoka Hayashi, who tapped the ball into the net in the eighth minute to give the Toffees an early lead they never relinquished. West Ham pushed for an equaliser through Viviane Asseyi and Riko Ueki but couldn’t find a way past a resolute Everton defence, with the result marking interim boss Scott Phelan’s second successive WSL win since taking charge.

The game looked destined for a draw until Millie Turner powered home a Maya Le Tissier free-kick in the 79th minute, securing Marc Skinner’s side all three points and keeping them second in the table.

Liverpool travel to the capital showing renewed signs of life after a miserable first half of the season. Gareth Taylor’s side went 12 WSL matches without a win before finally breaking through with a 2–1 victory over Tottenham. A 4–1 thrashing of Aston Villa last weekend underlined their revival, and they head into this fixture with confidence.

West Ham travel north after what is likely one of the stories of the WSL this season. Trailing Brighton 2-0 heading into the final ten minutes last Sunday, Rita Guarino’s side scored three times in nine minutes – through Ffion Morgan, Shekiera Martinez and Viviane Asseyi – to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback. It was the perfect tonic after a turbulent campaign. They will see this as an opportunity to continue the momentum.

Arsenal secured a crucial 1–0 win over Manchester City at Emirates Stadium to keep the Champions League chase alive, as Olivia Smith finished in the 17th minute after a defence-splitting pass from Mariona Caldentey. City pressed for an equaliser after the break, but Arsenal held firm to secure the clean sheet and three points. In a clash of the league’s best attack against its best defence, the defence prevailed.

This was a relatively tight call on paper (49% Arsenal). Our prematch model leaned home – and the result agreed, with 1–0 landing as one of the most likely scorelines we highlighted.

Liverpool 4–1 Aston Villa

Liverpool produced a ruthless, performance to beat Aston Villa 4–1 and climb off the bottom of the table. Mia Enderby (9’) and Martha Thomas (14’) put them in early control. Villa pulled one back through Miri Taylor (41’), but Liverpool managed the second half far better, restoring their cushion late on through Grace Fisk (83’) before Aurélie Csillag added a stoppage-time fourth (90+7’) to seal a statement win in the relegation playoff battle.

• For a second straight weekend, Liverpool’s attacking output has spiked well above their baseline – 1.54 xG vs 0.91 season average (≈1.7×), 11 shots vs 7.6, and 5 SoT vs 2.4 – and it translated into a clear outcome: a 4–1 win over Aston Villa.

• Everton were ruthless in the moments that matter: they had fewer shots (8) and less territory (45% possession), but created the only big chance (1–0) and took the match. Second time this season they’ve won like this – under pressure, but clinical.

Implication

• Everton’s win moves them to 9th on 14 pts (15 played), giving them tangible breathing room above the 12th-place relegation play-off spot – they’re five points clear of Leicester City (9 pts), albeit with Leicester still holding a game in hand.

• For London City Lionesses, it’s a missed opportunity to consolidate in the top half – they remain 6th on 19 pts (15 played), and the gap to 5th (Tottenham on 26) is still sizeable.

Retrospection

The model leaned home (49 – 32 – 19), with the most likely outcomes clustering around a low-scoring grind (1–0 / 0–0 / 1–1). The game state largely matched that cagey expectation. The divergence was the direction of the decisive moment: Everton had the only big chance and took it. The model got the “tight, low-margin match” right – it just backed the wrong side to finish the one defining moment.

West Ham United 3 – 2 Brighton

West Ham completed a stunning late turnaround, trailing 0 – 2 after Kiko Seike’s 40’ opener and Manuela Vanegas’s 63’ strike. Two goals in four minutes from Ffion Morgan (82’) and Shekiera Martinez (86’) levelled it, before Viviane Asseyi bundled in the winner at 90+1’ to seal a huge three points.

• West Ham United’s chance quality went through the roof. They posted 3.50 xG – roughly three times their season average (1.16) – with 7 shots on target (more than double their 3.4 average) and 4 big chances (vs 1.13). Even with the late drama, this was a huge output.

• Brighton had the ball (53% possession) but created very little – 0.44 xG (vs 1.30 season average), just 8 shots, and only 1 big chance. Their two goals came despite an attacking output miles below their usual level.

• Brighton had more possession, but West Ham owned the dangerous moments – 14 shots to 8, 7 SoT to 4, and 4 big chances to 1. The 3–2 scoreline was chaotic, but the underlying chance profile was heavily West Ham.

Implications

• West Ham United stay 10th on 11 pts (15 played) – a huge win emotionally, but the table impact is still knife-edge: they’re only 1 point above Liverpool (10 pts) and 2 points above Leicester City in the 12th-place play-off spot (9 pts), with Leicester also holding a game in hand.

• For Brighton, they stay 7th on 17 pts, but the cushion is thinning fast – they’re now only one point above 8th (Aston Villa on 16). A collapse like this doesn’t just drop points, it drags them back into the mid-table scrap rather than pulling away.

Retrospection

The model favoured a Brighton win (15 – 29 – 56) and expected them to control the outcome. For 80 minutes, the scoreboard agreed – Brighton were 2–0 up. But the underlying performance never matched a “56% away win” profile, and it eventually caught up with them – 0.44 xG and 1 big chance isn’t enough to survive that kind of pressure for 90 minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 – 2 Chelsea

Chelsea returned to winning ways after back-to-back defeats. Tottenham started brightly, but Walsh struck on 39 minutes to give Chelsea the lead. The standout xPts swing of the weekend came from West Ham United – a +2.81 jump that matches what the underlying numbers suggested. Although they won late, they comprehensively dominated on chance quality. At the top, Arsenal’s statement win pushes them back to 2nd on xPts (29.30) (+2.24), after swapping places with Chelsea last weekend. Manchester City remain clear xPts leaders (33.60), while Manchester United (+2.04) and Liverpool (+2.09) also posted “big weekend” underlying gains.

🌍 Weekend Landscape

Matchweek 15 delivers another clash of the season: Arsenal vs Manchester City at the Emirates, where the newly-crowned world champions host the runaway league leaders. The headline came from the Etihad: Manchester City demolished Chelsea 5–1 in what was supposed to be the weekend’s marquee fixture. Kerolin grabbed a hat-trick, and City generated nine big chances – their most emphatic statement of the season.

Manchester United continued their momentum with a 3–1 victory over Liverpool in the North-West derby. Lisa Naalsund scored twice in eight second-half minutes.

Tottenham mounted a comeback at West Ham, turning a 1–0 deficit into a 2–1 win despite finishing with ten after Drew Spence’s late red card. Spurs had 28 shots – their highest of the season – but missed every big chance before eventually finding a way through.

Elsewhere, London City pulled off the weekend’s biggest smash-and-grab at Brighton, winning 2–1 with just 0.21 xG. And Everton snatched all three points against Aston Villa through Martina Fernandez’s 89th-minute header – both goals assisted by Ruby Mace from set pieces.

Brighton started brightly, and Kiko Seike put them ahead on 23′ (assist Madison Haley). • Most importantly, the quality was concentrated in set-piece situations (0.66 set-piece xG; ~50% share), which aligns perfectly with the match’s two headed goals. So ultimately, set-piece was the difference maker.

Implications:

Everton’s win created breathing room above the bottom two, while Villa’s defeat left them stuck in the lower mid-table and still looking for consistency week-to-week.

Retrospection:

The model leaned Villa (38.1%) with “1–2” as the most likely scoreline – in other words, the same game was seen, but the set-piece finishing swung it the other way.

Manchester City 5–1 Chelsea

Implications:

City’s 13th league win in a row moved them 12 points clear of Chelsea and 11 ahead of United, while Chelsea dropped to third. Although our mid-season review already projected a League win, this is most it done.

Retrospection:

City were favourites (55.5%), but the predicted scorelines (mostly one-goal margins) totally underestimated the scale. The model expected a tight title clash; City delivered a separation performance beating the current champions comprehensively.

Expected Points – MW14: City pull away, Chelsea edge up

Manchester City posted the biggest xPts gain of the weekend (+2.62), turning their 5–1 demolition of Chelsea into a dominant underlying performance. Brighton (+2.40) and Tottenham (+2.29) also made significant jumps – Brighton despite losing, Spurs through sheer volume (28 shots). Chelsea moved up to second on xPts, but only because Arsenal didn’t play – their +0.30 gain from a 5–1 defeat tells the real story. At the bottom, Everton’s win lifted them above Leicester, who also didn’t play because of Arsenal Champions cup commitment.

Final Word

Gameweek 14 had a clear statistical through-line: territory and volume were often decisive, but not always rewarded in the way you’d expect. Tottenham and London City both won games where the underlying numbers point in a different direction.

At the other end of the spectrum, Manchester City’s demolition of Chelsea was the purest “numbers match the narrative” performance of the weekend: overwhelming xG, overwhelming shot quality, and a match that felt over, long before the final whistle.

Overview

Gameweek 13 delivered 16 goals and clean sheets. Late drama, missed chances, and clinical finishing defined a weekend where favourites had to fight harder than expected.

The headline came from Stamford Bridge: Arsenal beat Chelsea 2–0 to claim London derby bragging rights. Chelsea created five big chances and missed every one of them – their worst finishing display of the season.

Liverpool finally got off the mark in the league thanks to Mia Enderby’s stoppage-time double against Spurs. After 90 minutes of frustration, two goals in added time sparked scenes at St Helens.

Manchester United delivered the most emphatic win of the weekend, putting four past Aston Villa despite the game being level at half-time. Three goals in seven second-half minutes ended the contest.

Elsewhere, West Ham pulled off a classic smash-and-grab at Leicester, winning despite being outshot and outpossessed. And Manchester City, massive favourites against London City, needed Khadija Shaw’s 86th-minute finish to escape with all three points.

Everton’s rare attacking intent – This was uncharacteristically ambitious from Everton. Their 59% possession is 14.5 percentage points above their season average (44.5%). They also created 3 big chances – just one short of their season high – but missed all three. That wasteful finishing proved costly.

Clinical Brighton – Brighton won despite being second-best on most metrics. Their 0.87 xG was below their season average (1.39), and their 8 shots fell short of their usual 11.3 per match. But Cankovic needed just a 0.18 xG chance to score the winner – that’s ruthless efficiency when it mattered.

Nnadozie’s masterclass – Brighton’s goalkeeper was the standout player in the match. Everton generated 1.26 xGOT from their two shots on target in the second half alone, but Nnadozie kept everything out. Her performance was the difference between a Brighton win and an Everton comeback.

The Blues carved out five big chances and missed every single one, managing just a single shot on target from 18 attempts. Arsenal, ruthlessly efficient by contrast, struck twice in six second-half minutes through Beth Mead (55’, assist Alessia Russo) and Mariona Caldentey (61’, assist Mead) to claim the derby spoils.

Key stats

Chelsea’s finishing crisis – The xG told one story (Chelsea 1.85 vs Arsenal 1.64), but the scoreboard told another. Chelsea created five big chances – and missed all – a new season high for wastefulness. They also landed just one shot on target from 18 attempts, their lowest mark of the season. Even more damning, their xGOT (expected goals on target) was only 0.04, indicating that most efforts were blocked, off-target, or posed little threat to Anneke Borbe.

Arsenal’s clinical edge – The Gunners converted 1.54 xGOT from 1.64 xG, putting almost every meaningful chance on target. Chelsea had more opportunities but couldn't find the target when it mattered – Arsenal made their moments count.

Mead’s masterclass – Beth Mead was the standout player with a goal and assist and 3 chances created in 69 minutes. Her linkup play with Russo and Caldentey was devastating in that six-minute spell that decided the game.

Retrospection

Our prematch model made Chelsea slight favourites (38%) with 1–0, 1–1, and 0–0 the most likely scorelines – all low-scoring, tight outcomes. The 0–2 Arsenal win was outside those predictions, and the underlying numbers suggest Chelsea were unlucky: they lost the finishing battle comprehensively despite winning the chance creation one. Sometimes football doesn’t follow the script.

Aston Villa 1–4 Manchester United

A seven-minute blitz in the second half turned a tight contest into a rout. Manchester United took the lead through Julia Zigiotti Olme's strike from a corner (35'), but Kirsty Hanson quickly pulled Villa level (37'). After the break United found another gear. Elisabeth Terland (72’), Jessica Park (75’), and Hanna Lundkvist (79’) scored in quick succession to seal the most emphatic display of the weekend.

Key stats

United’s clinical finishing – Manchester United scored four goals from just 1.60 expected goals (xG), massively overperforming their expected output. The combined xG of their four goals was only 0.57. Olme’s opener came directly from a corner, valued at just 0.01 xG – meaning it would be scored only once in a hundred attempts – while Terland’s goal was rated at 0.05. This was ruthless finishing from low-probability positions.

Villa’s shot volume without quality – Aston Villa put 7 of their 11 shots on target – an unusually high conversion rate for them – but generated only 0.59 xG total. They created zero big chances, their worst output of the season. The shots were on target, but from poor positions.

Park’s devastating impact – Jessica Park was at the heart of United’s seven-minute blitz. She finished coolly for the third goal on 75 minutes, then turned provider four minutes later to set up Lundkvist for the fourth. One goal, one assist – Park’s quality in the final third killed the contest

But the Hammers scored from two improbable positions: Verena Hanshaw’s curling free-kick (34’, 0.07 xG) and Shekiera Martinez’s sharp finish (63’, 0.04 xG, assist Viviane Asseyi). Eva Nyström’s own goal in the 84th minute gave Leicester late hope, but it was too little, too late.

Leicester’s best performance... in a loss – The Foxes’ 58% possession smashed their previous season high (49%), and their 14 shots equalled their best single-match tally. Their 24 touches in the opposition box dwarfed West Ham’s 6. On almost every metric, Leicester controlled this game – except the scoreboard.

Identical xG, opposite outcomes – Both sides finished with exactly 0.54 xG, yet West Ham scored twice from open play while Leicester managed just an own goal consolation. The Hammers converted 0.11 combined xG into 2 goals – that’s ruthless overperformance from minimal opportunities.

West Ham’s defensive resilience – Facing sustained pressure, West Ham made 39 clearances and 23 tackles. They won 56% of ground duels despite being pinned back. This was a backs-to-the-wall display that yielded maximum points.

Retrospection

The model had this as a coin-flip (35% Leicester, 30% draw, 35% West Ham) with 1–1, 1–0, and 0–1 the likeliest scorelines. The result aligned with the model’s view that this could go either way – but the manner of victory was extraordinary. West Ham won despite being outplayed on almost every statistical measure, proving that football doesn’t always respect possession dominance.

Liverpool 2–0 Tottenham Hotspur

The most dramatic finish of the weekend. For 89 minutes, Liverpool battered Tottenham’s goal – 18 shots, 3 off the woodwork, 2.14 xG – and had nothing to show for it. Then Mia Enderby happened. The substitute struck twice in injury time (90+4’ and 90+5’) to snatch all three points in the most Liverpool way imaginable.

Liverpool’s best attacking display – by far – The Reds’ 18 shots smashed their previous season high (12), and their 2.14 xG was 37% higher than their best single-match output all season (1.56). They created 4 big chances – another season high – and recorded 35 touches in Spurs’ box. This was a different Liverpool.

Woodwork woes – Liverpool hit the frame three times, beating their previous single-match high of two. Combined with 4 saves from the Spurs keeper, that’s 7 blocked goal opportunities before the late breakthrough.

Spurs’ possession mirage – Tottenham controlled the ball (56%) but did almost nothing with it: 5 shots, 1 on target, 0.73 xG. Their 11 touches in Liverpool’s box tell the story – this possession was sterile, kept safely away from danger while Liverpool attacked in waves.

Retrospection

The model gave Spurs a slight edge (39%) with 0–1, 0–0, and 1–1 the likeliest scorelines – all low-scoring affairs. There were no changes in xPts rank from MW12 to MW13, but the underlying numbers moved sharply. Deloitte’s latest women’s Football Money League headline is the kind that shifts the conversation:

Revenue across the top 15 clubs hit €158m in 2024/25 – up 35%, pushing average club revenue past €10m for the first time.

This isn’t just growth. It’s scale.

But Deloitte also flags a second trend that matters just as much: a meaningful gap is forming between the very top and the rest.

So the real question becomes:

Are we watching a rising tide – or the start of a two-speed women’s club economy?

Bottom Line Up Front

1. Arsenal are #1 for the first time – €25.6m, driven by elite matchday monetisation and stronger commercial performance.

2. Chelsea are right behind – €25.4m, and Deloitte say they generated the highest commercial revenue in the top 15 (€19.1m).

Deloitte’s table is valuable because it shows not only total revenue, but where it comes from – matchday, broadcast, and commercial.

All figures below are in €k (thousands of euros).

Immediate take – the WSL places 8 clubs in the top 15, including the top two (Arsenal and Chelsea). Commercial is the main driver at the top: Arsenal (€16.2m) and Chelsea (€19.1m) both generate far more commercially than via matchday and broadcast combined.

2) Arsenal at #1 – and why this is bigger than “big crowds”

Deloitte’s Arsenal notes are unusually specific:

• €25.6m revenue – +43% year-on-year

• attendances exceeding 35,000 on five occasions across 2024/25

• tiered pricing to encourage repeat attendance

• top-15 leading matchday revenue: €7.0m

The key point is this:

Arsenal aren’t just drawing crowds – they are turning crowds into repeatable revenue.

That distinction matters for the next phase of the women’s game. Many clubs can create one-off “event” crowds. Far fewer can turn matchday into a reliable business line.

3) Chelsea’s model – commercial supremacy

If Arsenal’s edge is matchday monetisation, Chelsea’s is commercial power.

Deloitte say:

• Chelsea rank 2nd at €25.4m

• they generated the highest commercial revenue in the top 15: €19.1m

This fits a pattern we see across women’s football right now:

The clubs with the strongest global brand infrastructure – sponsorship sales, partner activation, content machinery – can scale faster on the commercial side than clubs relying primarily on matchday growth.

4) The revenue mix tells you what women’s football is actually selling

Deloitte’s clearest league-wide line is also the most important:

Commercial revenue comprises 72% of the top 15’s total revenue.

They also note:

• average matchday revenue rose 15% (from €1.3m to €1.5m)

• broadcast revenue declined 6% to €1.3m on average, now 13% of total revenue

What does this reveal?

Women’s club football is currently being built as a commercial and brand-led product first – with broadcast still relatively small in the revenue mix.

That makes your content lane (audience, visibility, attention, culture, and monetisation strategy) even more relevant, because attention is increasingly being converted via sponsorship and partnerships – not just TV money.

5) The broadcast decline – cyclical or structural shift?

The 6% broadcast revenue decline deserves deeper analysis:

While Deloitte attributes this partly to “timing of leagues’ domestic rights cycles,” the trend reveals something more significant:

Women’s football is operating with a far lower reliance on broadcast than the men’s game. Broadcast now represents 13% of top-15 revenue, down 6% to €1.3m on average (and notably, it still rose 3% among the 13 repeat clubs, suggesting cycle timing effects rather than pure demand collapse).

Unlike men’s football where broadcast revenue is 38% of revenue on average (and 47% for clubs ranked 11–20), women’s clubs are building direct-to-fan and brand-partnership economies.

This isn’t necessarily bad – it means:

• ✅ Less dependence on media gatekeepers

• ✅ More control over fan experience and pricing

• ✅ Higher margins on commercial partnerships

• ⚠️ But requires sophisticated audience development

6) The top-three gap – the biggest strategic signal in the whole release

Deloitte state that the top three clubs generate 46% of the top-15 total.

They also quantify the gap:

• Top three average revenue: €24.3m

• The other 12 clubs average: €7.0m

That is not a small gap. That’s a structural separation.

It suggests women’s football is moving from a “rising together” phase into a phase where:

1. Elite clubs professionalise rapidly and reinvest heavily

2. Mid-tier clubs must find a distinctive growth path (venue strategy, local identity, player-led marketing, or competition-driven prize money)

7) Scale context – how this compares to men’s football

To understand the true significance of €158m:

• Men’s top 20 clubs generate ~€11.2 billion annually

• Women’s top 15 now generate €158m

• That’s roughly 1.4% of men’s scale

But here’s the crucial insight: women’s football is growing at 35% annually while men’s football grows at 6%.

At current trajectories:

• Women’s football could reach €500m+ by 2028

• The revenue gap is closing faster than anyone predicted

8) Europe and innovation – revenue accelerants that can change club trajectories

Deloitte point to competition performance and new formats as meaningful revenue levers:

• Manchester City (4th, €12.9m) grew 63% after returning to UWCL knockout stages for the first time since 2020/21

• Bayern (8th, €7.2m) reportedly received €2.3m in prize money from the inaugural World Sevens Football tournament – “proportionately material” at this stage

This is important because it hints at a route for non-top-three clubs to jump tiers:

Strong European runs and emerging competition prize pools can meaningfully move the needle – especially when your baseline revenue is still in the single-digit millions.

9) The missing markets

Deloitte’s methodology excludes key markets:

• Australia (Matildas effect)

• Sweden (traditional powerhouse)

• USA (NWSL growth)

This isn’t just a data gap – it’s a strategic blind spot.

The real global women’s football economy is meaningfully higher than €158m once you include the markets Deloitte could not capture due to unavailable revenue data. In other words: this is best read as the top 15 we can measure, not the full global leaderboard.

10) What this means for the next 24 months

Three scenarios are now possible:

Scenario A: “Super Club Era”

• Top 3 clubs pull further ahead

• Mid-tier clubs become feeder systems

• Competitive balance suffers (the gap becomes extractive, not just large)

Scenario B: “Rising Floor”

• New competitions and incremental prize money raise the baseline

• Broadcast rights cycles improve

• Gap narrows through structural changes (distribution, scheduling, commercial uplift)

Scenario C: “Two-Speed Economy”

• Elite tier (€20m+ clubs) vs. professional tier (€5–15m clubs)

• Different business models for different tiers

• Both can be sustainable (elite global brands; domestic-first professional clubs)

Most likely outcome: Scenario C — because the current revenue distribution already looks two-tier: the top clubs are operating at a different commercial scale, while the rest are building more traditional professional models.
